Eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca)

The Eastern imperial eagle is the rarest eagle in Greece and one of the rarest birds of prey in the Mediterranean countries. It feeds on rodents, reptiles and other small animals, which it catches with its strong claws and beak.
Each pair lays 2-3 eggs. It is estimated that there are 10 pairs of golden eagles in our country, 6 of them in the forests of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The dramatic decrease in the number of these beautiful and so useful birds is due to illegal hunting, agricultural poisons and the shrinking of forests.
